Upgrading is a most important industrial process in petroleum fields, whereby a wide range of residues without valuable uses may be converted to an expensive light liquid and gases used as fuel or as a feedstock to petrochemical industries.

Upgrading is achieved by using carbon rejection or Liydrotreatuig technologies.

The mam objectives of the two technologies are to decrease feedstock C / H ratio by coking process in the first instance and by adding hydrogen in the second.

One of the carbon rejection processes used, is discriminatory destructive distillation as upgrading process, in treating two types of Iraqi heavy fractions vacuum residue, and furfural extract.

3D-simulator was designed and implemented to select optimum parameters co achieve the upgrading objectives on those heavy feedstock's.

3 D-simulator design was based on using heat carrier particles (Karoline or ebonite) tor short emote them cross-flow between hydrocarbon feed and catalyst particles.

The objective of short contact time is to avoid over cracking reactions, where the flow direction objective is to decrease residence time distribution of the catalyst particle.

Chapter one of the work is an introduction to upgrading.

The progressive development of processes and the problems associated with heavy fraction cracking were outlined.

Chapter two concentrates on the FCC process and process kinetics covering the riser disadvantages, explaining lumping techniques developed to build up a mathematical model representing reaction kinetics.
