الملخص الإنجليزي

Short concrete members like brackets, corbels and ledger beams have failed by direct shear.

Such failure in high strength concrete may be brittle and catastrophic.

Steel fibers restrain cracking, increase tensile strength, and enhance ductility and energy absorption characteristics.

Therefore, it is possible to use steel fibers as shear reinforcement to reduce deformation, increase ductility and the ultimate capacity of connections.

This work presents an experimental and theoretical investigation into the behavior of connections subjected to direct shear.

The investigation also includes the effect of steel fiber reinforcement on the strength and behavior of these connections.

Thirty-six push-off specimens with or without precracking were subjected to direct shear stress.

The variables studied were fiber percentage, the amount reinforcement crossing the shear plane at right angle, pre-existing crack in the shear plane, and size and arrangement of reinforcement.

Measurements of deformations were made throughout the tests.

Based on push-off failure tests from this work and those available in the literature, it was found out that when a separate term was included with a function of compressive strength the prediction of direct shear strength was much better that existing design equation.

This was true ; or both normal and high strength concrete with or without fibers.

For a given loading among otherwise similar specimens, fiber ultimate failure load.

Push-off specimens with steel fibers exhibited greater ductility of behavior than those without fiber.

Cylinder compression tests of control specimens have shown significantly greater ductility when containing fiber reinforcement.

In addition, compressive strength and tensile strength increased by up to 18 and 57 percent respectively, when steel fibers was used.
