الملخص الإنجليزي

This thesis addresses the issue of energy efficiency for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs).

In a MANET, a mobile node consumes its power in message communication, message processing, and other operation missions.

The amount of power a mobile node consumes for communication is the highest and the dominant as compared to what a node consumes for other tasks.

The issue of energy efficiency in message communication in MANETs can be relaxed using one of the following approaches : the design of energy and spectral efficient wireless communication hardware, and the design of energy efficient message communication protocols.

Message communication protocols in MANETs consist of two phases, route discovery and data forwarding.

It is well recognized that the cost of information exchange (in terms of power consumption, overhead, and delay) during route discovery is higher than the cost of data forwarding.

Therefore, minimizing power consumption during route discovery is a vital requirement to extend the lifetime of the battery-powered mobile nodes.

The power consumed in communication is proportional to the square of the node radio transmission range (R) ; therefore, minimizing R contributes to a significant reduction in power consumption and consequently increases the mobile node lifetime.

This thesis presents a description and performance evaluation of a new efficient power conservation scheme, namely, the location-based power conservation (LBPC) scheme.

It is based on the concept of reducing R by utilizing locally available nodes location information to adjust R according to one of the three proposed radius adjustment criteria: farthest, average, and random.

So that instead of transmitting with full power to cover up to its maximum radio transmission range (R max), the transmitting node adjust R to less than R max, which provides a power conservation depending on the square of the ratio R / R max The LBPC scheme consists of two main steps : (1) the source node locates its first-hop neighbors by calculating the distance (r) between the node and all nodes for which it has location information ; if r ≤ R max, then this node is a first-hop neighbor, otherwise it is not, and (ii) adjust R according to one of the above radius adjustment criteria farthest, average, and rand The LBPC scheme is implemented on the MANET simulator (MAN Sim).

In order to evaluate the performance of the LBPC scheme, four scenarios are simulated.

The first scenario compares the performance of the LBPC scheme when implemented for power conservation on three widely-used route discovery algorithms : pure, dynamic probabilistic, and location-aided routing scheme 1 (LAR-1) algorithms.

The other three scenarios investigate the effects of number of nodes (n), nodes speed (u), and R max on the performance of the LBPC scheme and the network.

The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by calculating the power conservation ratio (Pc), while the performance of the network is evaluated by calculating two standard network parameters, namely, network reachability (RCH), and number of retransmission (RET).

In addition, for all scenarios the dynamic retransmission probability (pt) of the probabilistic algorithm is evaluated, compared, and analyzed.
