الملخص الإنجليزي

This work was carried out to examine the effects of oral administration of volatile oil extracts of Artemisia sieberi (AHA) on the activity of Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Thyroid (HPT) Axis in diabetic rats.

Fifty rats divided into five experimental groups: control, control treated with diluted oil of AHA, diabetic None treated, diabetic group : treated with diluted oil of AHA and diabetic group : treated with metformin.

Oral administrations were used 8.1 mg / kg body weight of diluted oil of AHA and 14.2 mg / kg of metformin for 6 weeks showed significant (p < 0.05) reduction in the level of blood glucose diabetic rats compared to control.

Such dosage showed a protection against body weight loss of diabetic animals.

Significant (p < 0.05) weight loss was observed in untreated diabetic rats than untreated normal rats.

Treatment with 8.1 mg / kg body weight of diluted oil of AHA the weight gain compared to untreated diabetic rats.

The food and water intake increased significantly (p < 0.05) in untreated diabetic rats compared to untreated normal rats.

Significant reduction (p < 0.05) of food intake and water intake were noticed after the treatment with diluted oil of AHA The food and water intake (p < 0.05) increased significantly in untreated diabetic rats compared to untreated normal rats.

The blood glucose was increased significantly in untreated diabetic rats when compared to untreated normal rats (p < 0.05).

Administration of diluted oil of AHA lids to significant decrease in blood glucose levels in diabetics treated groups (p < 0.05).

Present findings indicate that oral administration of volatile oil extracts of AHA lower the blood glucose and serum lipids in diabetic's rats.

This is of interest, since elevated concentrations of blood glucose and serum lipids are risk factors in the development of arteriosclerosis in diabetes mellitus.

Based on the results obtained in this study, it can be concluded that oral administration of Artemisia sieberi treatment produced significant hypoglycemic effects in alloxan-induced diabetic rats, protection against body weight loss of diabetic animals and might alleviate the diabetes-induced disturbances of heart rate and some hematological parameters.

Serum urea and creatinine levels significantly (p < 0.05) increased in the diabetic groups, but the extracts significantly (p < 0.05) reduced serum urea and creatinine levels.

It is concluded that the diluted oil of AHA may reduce serum urea and creatinine levels and confer a protective effect on the kidney of diabetic rats.

Serum T3 decreased significantly (P < 0.05) in diabetic rats and the diluted oil of AHA significantly increased the lowered serum T3, T4, and TSH levels (P < 0.05) to the control group.

The diabetes lowered the expression rate of hsp70 in kidney and liver significantly (p value for both < 0.05).

Furthermore, the thyroid gland did not exhibit a significant expression of hsp70 between diabetic and non-diabetic groups, the treatment of both metformin and diluted oil of AHA was able to increase the expression rate of hsp70 in liver, kidney and thyroid gland significantly (p value < 0.05 for the all).

Our results revealed that diabetes increased the expression rate of iNOS in thyroid gland, kidney and liver significantly (p value for all < 0.05).

The treatment of both metformin and diluted oil of AHA was able to lower the expression rate of iNOS in liver, kidney and thyroid gland significantly (p value < 0.05 for all).
