Public transportation is one of the social facilities which are provided to improve the social welfare.
Due to the steady increase in public transportation demand, there is a need to provide more desirable and user-friendly public transportation system. This thesis presents a study on the public transportation system in Duhok city and evaluates the characteristics and performance of operating five bus routes working on these selected routes within the CBD, 248 mini-buses with 24 seats on Baroshki route and 349 mini-buses with 14 seats on the remainder four routes covering 35.87 km toward CBD and 37.4 km from CBD toward out of it are operating. Field work and data collection took about 5 months, starts at February 2010, involving 300 samples using vehicle use-running survey to show the characteristics and measuring running speed, journey speed, delay at bus stopping and traffic signals, boarding and / or alighting of passengers.
One thousands five hundred questionnaire forms were delivered to passengers in terminals and bus stopping to show characteristics and opinions of passengers regarding public transportation service. It was found that there were significant difference between running speed and journey speeds in which average journey speed ranged from 12.02 to 28.40 km / h while average running speeds ranged between 14.34 and 36.01 km / h because of delays resulted due to bus stopping, traffic signals, congestion of traffic, etc.
The journey time ranged between 2.11 minutes per kilometer on Tanahi route and 5.0 minutes per kilometer on Baroshki route.
The study revealed that bus stopping was the main cause of delay through the route while congestion was the reason for delay at CBD.
The study shows that time of the day affect the demand and speed.
Also, the randomly located of bus stopping must be rearranged and reallocated as 3 to 4 per one kilometer.
It was found passenger comfort LOS was “ F ” while for hours of service and passenger loads at transit stops it was “ E”.
Reliability LOS for on-time performance was variable and for most routes it was “ F ”.
The study found that most of trip makers were of low income (less than 450.000 ID per month) and 58 percent of them have no car.
The study suggests recommendations that make the system more effective and lead to increase confidence of trip makers to use public transportation services by fixing bus stopping and obligation of bus passengers and drivers to these locations, constant scheduling, change type of bus stops from curb-side to other types and organizing operation of public transportation by private companies or be under supervision of government.
