الملخص الإنجليزي

The study area sits within Erbil plain (locally called Dashti Hawler) about 10 km west of Erbil City, covering about 7.0 km2.

It was chosen as it is currently used as a waste dumpsite and to septic tank discharge area.

This study addresses Erbil dumpsite, focusing on its impact on the groundwater, use one of the geophysical method ; namely the electrical resistivity method, as a tool to examine this impact, employed to characterize the contaminant through changing resistivity behavior pattern.

Soil and water samples were collected nearby the Erbil dumpsite to assess the baseline data.

The results of water sample analyzed are within the acceptable limits WHO (2003) and they are suitable for drinking and irrigation.

The results of soil sample analysis show that clays are of loam types with strongly alkaline.

Twenty eight VES points were taken by Schlumberger method interpreted qualitatively and quantitatively.

Three geo- electrical sections around the dumpsite project were constructed.

These sections revealed five zones of alternation clastic sediments with lateral changes and contamination zones were recorded in the vicinity of the household septic discharge site.

The alternation of clastic sediments reflects the Bai Hassan Formation which is characterized by vertical and lateral variations with good quality of groundwater in the study area.

The average depth from the surface to the top of the aquifer is about 80m.

From the results of geo-electrical sections, the septic tank discharges valley has been polluting the soil.

On the other hand, no adverse impact on ground water quality is anticipated in the present project.

The contaminated area occurred and revealed very low resistivity compared with surrounding area.

Two zones of contamination were detected along profiles that are vicinity to the septic tanks discharge valleys with thickness about (1.0- 4.0m).

Evidence of lack of adherence to proper landfill structure, operation a management was recorded and recommendations were postulated for rectification.

The Environmental Impacts Assessment (EIA) that was undertaking for this project has also postulated mitigate set simple measures.

The assessment revealed lack of environmental awareness by public, workers, and personnel, which can be solved through regular environmental training programs.
