الملخص الإنجليزي
The aim of this research is to investigate two selected water harvesting schemes in the Northern Badia, their efficiency, and their location suitability.
In addition, the quality of water was also examined to evaluate the collected water within the ponds for the different uses.
The water volume of Shubeika pond for the trap (advanced pond) and the main pond was 528.8m³, 5200m³ respectively, although the designed capacity is of the order of 4405m³ and 46800m³ respectively.
The efficiency was calculated to be12 %.
The expected annual sediment deposited was about 2700.9m³ / year where as the actual was 6562.6m³.
For Rail pond the volume of water was 24918.12m³, while the designed capacity is 3114.65m³.
The efficiency was calculated to be 80 % the expected annual sediment deposited is of the order of 2263.88m³ / year while the actual surveyed amount of sediment deposited was 1585.8m³.
Shubeika and Rail ponds have catchment areas of (82.7) km² ; (89.8) km² respectively.
The annual average amounts of precipitation falling over the catchment were 5.199MCM and 5.48MCM.
The run off amounts were estimated to be 0.156MCM and 0.164MCM.
The circularity ratio was calculated to be 0.356 and 0.577, while the elongation ratio was 0.37 and 0.38.
The estimated stream density was 0.0013 and 0.0015.
The nature of sediment in Shubeika pond was gravel, sand, silt and clay.
Their percentages in the trap pond were 3.83 % : 2.86 % : 55.00 % : 38.31 % respectively while in the main pond they were 1.68 % : 10.62 % : 53.21 % : 34.50 % respectively.
The nature of sediment in Rail pond were gravel, sand, still and clay.
Their percentages in the pond were 25.036 % : 21.27 % : 28.57 % : 25.11 %.
The environment of deposition for Shubeika pond sediments reflects a lacustrine environment while for Rail sediment it was a fluvial–lacustrine deposits.
Forty three water samples were collected from the two ponds, for chemical analysis to evaluate the quality of water.
The concentration values of cations and anxious were found within the limits used for irrigation purposes.
It could be used for drinking purposes after a slight treatment processes.
The water type classified in to three species.
The water within Ravel pond is of normal earth alkaline type with prevailing Bicarbonate–sulfate.
Within Shubeika trap water is of normal earth alkaline type with prevailing sulfate.
In Shubeika main pond the water is of normal earth alkaline with high alkaline component with prevailing sulfate.
This gave an indication about the source of water.
