الملخص الإنجليزي

Erythrosine (E-127) is the most applied food dye that is added to color processed meat.

However, the dye should be within the safety limit set by the food regulations.

In this work, a simple method was proposed for accurate determination of E127 after being extracted from Jordanian processed meat.

The water soluble E-127 can be easily extracted using chloroform and THF and the dye content can be easily determined using thin layer chromatography.

E-127 was detected in five commercial meat samples.

The level of E-127 was less than 25 mg / kg which is within the permitted international level.

Activated carbon was found effective for up taking the dye with maximum capacity of 11.31 mg / g at 40 o C where the following experimental conditions maintained at mass of carbon 0.5 g, volume of solution 100 mL, dye concentration range 50–450 mg / L with participle diameter 300-500 μm.

To get more idea about dye adsorption mechanisms, the adsorption data of E-127 were modeled using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms.

The model parameters were found to be 12.52 (KL), 11.31mg / g (QM), 0.8352 (R2) and 1.25 (n), 10.32 (Kf), 0.9965 (R2) which were obtained at 40 o C.

The activated carbon was proved to be a perfect absorbent for E-127 as indicated from the distribution value (8.41 L / g) and this value was reported at the following conditions: 50 mg / L dye, 0.5 g carbon mass, 4 days agitation, and pH 7.

However, the rate of dye uptake was very slow and accordingly the activated carbon is not recommended as solid-phase extractant for E-127.

Furthermore, aluminum oxide was found excellent extractant for pre-concentration of E-127 at small levels.

The best elution solvent for the adsorbed dye was Tetrahydrofuran.

The best conditions for pre-concentration were : mass = 4 g, elution volume = 10 mL, pH = 7.0, initial dye level = 0.1 mg / L, sample volume = 1500 mL, and low rate of 7.0 mL/min.

The developed extraction method was reasonable for extraction and pre-concentration of E-127 (recovery = 61 %) from real water samples were the dye supposed to be discharged.

Thermodynamic studies indicated that E-127 adsorption onto activated carbon was an exothermic process and spontaneously at 293, 303 and 313 K.

The values of free Gibbs energy (ΔG) were -6.01, - 6.12 and- 6.23 KJ / mol respectively.

The enthalpy value of adsorption was -2.8 KJ indicate a physiosorption process.

The process occurred with positive entropy.
