الملخص الإنجليزي

This study explored the effect of audio visual chat on foreign language 9th grade students’ performance in the productive skills (speaking and writing).

To achieve its objectives, the study aimed to answer the following three research questions.

First, are there any significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental and control groups, due to the method of teaching (Internet chat vs.

face-to-face interaction) on EFL learners’ productive skills? Second, are there any significant differences between the mean scores of the experimental groups due to the Internet chat technique (audio vs.

visual) on EFL learners’ productive skills? Third, which language skill (speaking vs.

writing) does the Internet chat develop more? Ninety 9th grade female students in the first semester of the scholastic year 2011 / 2012 at Kufersoom Secondary School for Girls were selected as the study sample.

They were randomly assigned into three groups, the first experimental group (30 students), the second experimental group (30 students) and the control group (30 students).

The two experimental groups were taught using the computer-based method.

Skype program was used on the Internet through connecting the computers with cameras and microphones for the first group and microphones for the second group.

The control group was taught using the traditional method by the same teacher.

A thirteen question achievement test related to speaking skill and writing skill to measure students’ performance before and after the study was administered to all students who participated in the study.

Its validity and reliability were verified.

The independent variables were the method of teaching productive skills (Internet chat vs.

face-to-face interaction) and the teaching technique (visual and audio).

The dependent variable was the students' performance scores in productive skills (speaking and writing) on the post-test.

Relevant statistical analyses related to means, standard deviations and ANOVA test were used.

The findings of the study showed that there were significant differences in the mean scores between the control (face-to-face) and the experimental (Internet chat) group in favor of the experimental group.

Furthermore, the findings revealed that there was a significant effect in the mean scores between visual and audio technique, in favor of the visual technique.

The findings also revealed that there was a significant effect for productive skills (speaking and writing).

Audio visual chat was helpful in developing speaking skill better than writing skill.

Finally, a number of related recommendations were presented to students, teachers, researchers, and the Ministry of Education.
