الملخص الإنجليزي

An investigation was done at Al Al-bayt wastewater treatment plant to evaluate the four types of water (untreated wastewater, treated wastewater, fresh groundwater and mixed fresh water and treated wastewater), plants irrigated with treated wastewater, soil subjected to irrigation in addition to sludge produced from the wastewater treatment plant.

For water samples physical parameters and major ionic composition (electrical conductivity, pH, HCO3 -, Cl-, NO3 -, SO4-2, Ca+2, Mg+2, Na+ and K+) in addition to four heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu and Ni) was determined.

For soil, sampling was done from two depth, upper (0-20 cm) and lower (20-40 cm).

The soils were subjected to heavy metals and microbiological content.

For sludge and plants irrigated with treated wastewater only the above mentioned heavy metals were determined.

The results showed that the water of treated wastewater and the fresh water were suitable for irrigation as they were below the Jordanian standards and there was no threat of using it for irrigation in terms of major ionic composition as well as microbial content.

The heavy metals of water were low that only Ni and Zn were above the detection limits.

For heavy metals although their concentrations were low in the treated wastewater they accumulated in the soil as its concentrations increased with the period of irrigation where the highest concentrations were in the lower soil profile and for the soils irrigated for 15 years and the lowest was for soils irrigated for 5 years after the blank samples.

Sludge showed the highest concentrations of heavy metals among all analyzed samples which was attributed to the slight alkalinity of the treated wastewater enhancing precipitation of heavy metals.

The efficiency of the wastewater treatment plant was high as there was a sharp decrease in BOD5 and COD of produced wastewater and there was not significant increase in treated salinity although the wastewater treatment plant is located in dry and hot climatic conditions.
