This research aims to investigate and evaluates the performance of multimedia filter to remove suspended solids from raw water as a function of different design parameters.

In this work, a set of experiments is carried out by pilot scale of laboratory filter (deep bed filter) to obtain the observed data of removal efficiency and the pressure drop of multimedia filter and The theoretical study is implemented by different microscopic models or so-called fundamental modeling which are (Yao, Happel, R-T) .These models had been used to predict the initial log removal of particle and the single collector efficiency and evaluated based on experimental data.

The results depicted that Rajagopalan and Tien (R-T) model gives the best fitting with experimental data which it is depending on all transport mechanisms as well as the effects of London-van der Waals attractive forces.

It has been found that the size of dispersed particles and their distribution are very impotent physical parameters that influence on multimedia filter.

As will as, phenomenological model is developed in this work for evaluating both initial and transient stage removal efficiency and the pressure drop of dispersed particles as a function of different media characteristics, operating parameters and the quality of raw water.

It is conclude that the particle deposition can change the pore morphology and consequently the porosity of the porous medium and the local pressure gradient owing to the increasing of deposit on filter bed.

Results showed that the proposed model can satisfactorily simulate the experimental behavior, and the prediction values have a good agreement with the experimental data.

The results illustrates that there is a relationship between flow rate, effective size of media type and optimum bed depth.
