-Vernier motor is a direct drive motor, which is used as an actuator in numerous applications in which they must rotate at low speed with high torque and low torque ripple.

Recently, various types of vernier motor have been developed.

The HB-type vernier motor is one of them.

A HB-type vernier motor has NS slots with three-phase winding for the stator.

Unlike the HB-type stepping motor, the HB-type vernier motor has a winding as field system in the rotor.

The rotor has two parts.

The relationship between NS, NR and NP is NS ± NP/2 = NR, where NR is the number of rotor silent teeth in one part and NP is the number of poles.

The rotor of the vernier motor moves at sub-multiple of the angular velocity of the stator magnetomotive force (mmf) by a multiplying factor of NP /2NR.

In this work modeling and control of the HB-type vernier motor have carried out.

The d-q model of the HB-type vernier motor is implemented using Matlab/Simulink software package.

To validate the motor mathematical model simulation and dynamic responses, the motor and its drive circuit are fabricated and implemented.

A sudden load torque was applied to motor shaft using loading device and the motor speed and torque responses were recorded.

The results show that the experimental results are identical to the simulation results.

Also the results show that the motor speed and torque profile suffer from a short period of oscillations at instant of sudden load application and removal.

Thus two types of controllers will be used to improve the motor torque and speed profiles.

The first one is a conventional Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller and the second is a PD-like fuzzy + I controller.

The motor speed is the feed back signal to determine error in frequency at instant of starting and loading, the output of the controller is then feed to the drive circuit.

The presented drive circuit uses Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation and Voltage Source Inverter (SVPWM VSI).

The two controllers and the drive circuit are simulated with the Matlab/Simulink software package, and experimentally implemented using Personal Computer (PC), interfacing circuit, and three-phase inverter.

The experimental software program used is high level language based on m-file Matlab software.

The motor is tested for different operating and loading conditions.

The tests show that the implementation of the PID controller improves the motor torque and speed profiles even with sudden load application and removal.

And the implementation of PD like fuzzy + I controller improves the motor torque and speed profiles very well and expands the motor operating frequency range.
