The generalization of DARCY’s law in 2.diemnsions has led to equations which describe permeability of the soil as a symmetric tensor of second rank (1, 2).

In seepage problems it is common to define the GLOBAL coordinate axis to coincide with the pr incipal dir ect ions of t he per meabilit y t ens or , ther ef or e, the cr oss pr oduct ( off – diagonal) components (Kxy ,Kyx) of the permeability tensor will be zer o.

It is ther efor e the purpose of this r esear ch to show the influence of the off- diagonal terms of the per mea bilit y t ens or on t he det er mi ned exit gr a dient s behind a ver t ica l s heet pil e embedded in an anisotr opic homogenous soil of finite depth.

Also of inter est is the derivation of an equation for the determination of exit gradients obtained from coor dinate transformations ofcomposite function.
