Aqueous extract of Thymus capitatus aerial parts was investigated to assess its effect on some biochemical parameters and histological changes of pancreas in alloxan-induced diabetic rats.

Diabetes was induced in overnight fasted female albino rats by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan monohydrate at dose of 150 mg / kg body weight (bwt) and this injected dose was repeated after 48 hrs.

Animals were divided into five groups of thirty rats each: group I served as normal control, group II act as diabetic control.

The diabetic rats treated groups (IE, IV and V) were treated with metformin at a dose of 200 mg / kg, T.

capitatus at a dose of 300 mg / kg and T.

capitatus at a dose of 600 mg/kg bwt.

A treatment was performed by intraperitoneal injection of 5 ml once a day for 28 consecutive days.

Results showed significant differences between treated and control groups.

This was demonstrated by decreasing blood glucose level, improving body weight gain and pancreas to body weight ratio, enhancing activity of serum amylase, decreasing activity of serum lipase and raising level of serum insulin at week 2, 4, 6 and 8 after treatment.

In addition, histological evaluation of pancreas in treated-diabetic rats revealed considerable differences of pancreatic architecture in all animal groups at week 4 and 8 after treatment.

Few inflammatory cells, more capillaries and enhanced mass and shape of pancreatic acinus and islets of Langerhans were detected in the pancreas of treated comparing to untreated diabetic rats.

However, diabetic rats treated with aqueous extract at a dose of 600 mg / Kg bwt exerted the most significant effect compared to metformin treated rats.

These results indicate that T.

capitatus aqueous extract might be a fruitful source for hypoglycemic drugs and / or a promoter of the anti-oxidant status of pancreas.

Though, further immunohistochemical and ultra-structural investigations are required to verify therapeutic capacity of T.

capitatus concerning detailed structural changes of pancreas.
