Lipid profile changes in pregnant women with pre-eclampsia

Objective : To determine whether the changes in lipid profile are related to the severity of pre-eclampsia and the possibility of using lipid profile as a screening test for early prediction of pre-eclampsia. Setting : It was carried out in Maternity and Childhood Hospital in Al-Najaf for period between 1ST April to 30th November 2007. Study design : This study include 80 pregenant women divided into 3 groups Group A : women with severe pre-eclampsia in the 3rd trimester. Group B : women with mild- moderate pre-eclampsia in the 3rd trimester. Group C : Normal healthy normotensive pregnant women in the 3rd trimester.

All were investigated for serum lipid profile.

We performed the following laboratory measurement for all groups. 1- serum cholesterol (CH) 2- serum triglyceride (TRI) 3- serum HDL-cholesterol from these results LDL-cholesterol and VLDL-cholesterol were calculated.

Results There was significant increase in serum triglyceride and VLDL- cholesterol level in severe pre-eclamptic women than control and mild cases but there was no significant difference between mild and control cases. The mean value of HDL in mild and sever pre-eclamptic women was less than that recorded in the control group. No significant differences were record in the mean values of cholesterol and LDL between control and mild and severe pre-eclamptic women. Aim of the study The aim of this study is to assess if there are changes in lipid profile in preeclampsia and if these changes can be used as marker of severity of the condition (preeclampsia) or if the lipid profile changes can be used as a screening test for early prediction of pre-eclampsia.
