In vitro sensitivity of leishmania donovani promastigotes (LDP)‎ for some drugs compared to meglumine antimoniate

This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of antimicrobials against Leishmania donovani promastigotes, cultured in Rose Well Park Memorial Institute (RPMI) medium, with metron-idazole(1ìg / ml), Azithromycin(6, 12, 18 ìg / ml)and meglomin antimoniates(20 ìg / ml) as standard drug.

Samples were divided into groups each group was treated with one drug in addition to control group.

Promastigotes were subdivided into motile, sluggish and immotile during the counting process and data were compared with that of the control group and meglomin antimoniates, the results showed that mean count of control group was (33.3) LDP / ml while mean counts of LDP in the treated groups were as follows : (5.15, 2.9 ,1.4) LDP / ml for azithromycin (6, 12, 18 ìg / ml), respectively, (2.9) LDP / ml for metronedazol and (1LDP / ml) for antimoniates.

From the data of this study, it was learnt that Azithromycin (different doses) is effective enough to be tried in vivo as antileishmanial agents in the future which is cost effective with minimal side effects.
