Endoscopic septoplasty versus traditional septoplasty

Objectives : This study was undertaken to assess the effectiveness of doing endoscopic septoplasty with or without functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

The aim of the study was to discuss the advantages of using the endoscope to do septoplasty.

Methods: Sixty nine patients with nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum,chronic sinusitis with polyposis and deviated nasal septum.

Thirty nine patients with nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum or chronic sinusitis and nasal polyposis with deviated septum were operated by using the endoscope and thirty cases of chronic sinusitis with septal deviation which managed by FESS and traditional septoplasty to correct the deviated nasal septum .

.We include in our study only cases of septal deviation and chronic sinusitis .We ixclode all other nasal pathology.

The study discusses the advantage of using the endoscope to correct the nasal septum deviation and the advantages of doing endoscopic septoplasty in cases of chronic sinusitis with or with out nasal polyposis during FESS surgery.

Results: Sixty nine patients with nasal obstruction due to deviated nasal septum,chronic sinusitis with polyposis and deviated nasal septum.

Thirty nine cases were done by using the advantage of endoscope.

Thirty one cases were cases of FESS and 8 cases were cases of endoscopic septoplasty which included 3 cases of revision septoplasty.

Thirty cases of FESS and traditional septoplasty.

Endoscopic septoplasty with FESS decreases chance of recurrence of sinusitis and even polyposis.

Corrections of the deviated part of the septum increase the air entry through the nose and keep the middle meatus wide.

Conclusion: Endoscopic septoplasty is highly useful in managing various types of pathology in the septum.
