Evaluation of some sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) hybrids under rainfed conditions

The experiment was carried out at eight locations at Blue Nile State namely Roseries, Khordunia, North Agadi, South Agadi, East Haroun, West Haroun, Damazin Research Station, and ELbangadid for two consecutive seasons (2003 / 2004 and 2004 / 2005), to estimate the genetic variability among 20 locally generated sunflower hybrids and to determine the genotype x environment interaction as well as to evaluate the stability of performance for the hybrids at the sixteen environments.
A randomized complete block design with six replications was used at each environment and data on 10 characters including yield and its components were collected. In all environments, highly significant differences among the evaluated hybrids were detected for days to 50 % flowering, days to maturity, plant height (cm), head diameter (cm),number of seeds / head, 1000-seed weight (g), seed yield/plant (g) and seed yield (t / ha).
The rest of the characters viz : stem diameter (cm) and percentage of empty seeds showed non- significant differences.
The combined analysis was carried out for those characters with homogenous error variance viz : number of seed / head, percentage of empty seeds, 1000-seed weight (g), seed yield / plant (g) and seed yield (t / ha).
The genotype x season was highly significant for days to maturity, plant height (cm), head diameter (cm), seed yield/plant (g) and seed yield (t / ha), significant for days to 50 % flowering and number of seeds / head.
The genotype x location was highly significant for days to 50 % flowering, days to maturity, plant height (cm), head diameter (cm), number of seeds / head, 1000-seed weight (g) and seed yield / plant (g), whereas only significant difference recorded for seed yield (t / ha).
Genotype x season x location was highly significant differences for days to 50 % flowering, days to maturity, plant height (cm), seed yield/plant (g) and seed yield (t/ha), significant for head diameter (cm) and number of seeds / head.
The overall ranking of the 20 hybrids for yield and its components according to stability parameters (regression coefficient = bi, deviation from regression line = δ2d and Wricke equivalence = Wi ), showed that Hysun 33 was the most top hybrid followed by SHA 25-2, SHA5, SHA7 and SHA29.
SHA41 was the last ranked hybrid followed by SHA25-1, SHA32, SHA42-M and SHA37.
Two hybrids SHA25-1 and Hysun 33 were stable for yield and its components under favorable environments, whereas, SHA5 and SHA18 were the stable hybrids under unfavorable conditions.
