الملخص الإنجليزي

The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of breed on reproductive traits of Nubian, Saanen and Nubian x Saanen Crossbred bucks.

The study was carried under the normal climatic conditions of Sudan, in order to provide necessary data to use these bucks in genetic improvement programmes, using artificial insemination technique.

Eleven mature bucks (4 Nubian, 3 Saanen and 4 Nubian x Saanen Crossbred) were used in this study to prepare semen samples which were collected with an artificial vagina.

The Nubian bucks were 2 - 3 years of age, with an average body weight of 33 kg, while the Saanen bucks were 4 - 5 years of age, with an average body weight of 59 kg.

The Crossbred bucks (50 % Saanen) were 2 - 3 years of age with an average body weight of 37.5 kg.

The study examined the relationship between breed and sperm characteristics (volume of ejaculate, concentration, physical appearance, mass activity, sperm motility percent, dead sperm percent and abnormal sperm percent).

Semen samples were diluted with either Tris or skim milk-based extenders.

The diluted semen was preserved at +5 °c and was evaluated for motility at 0 hour, 24 hours and 48 hours.

The results obtained indicated that semen characteristics of all groups were not affected by breed except for volume of ejaclate.

Saanen bucks produced the greater mean semen volume (1.09 ± 0.49 ml) than Nubian and Crossbred bucks (0.77 ± 0.44 ml and 0.84 ± 0.53, respectively).

Sperm concentration was higher in the Nubian bucks (2.51 ± 2.05 x 109) than in the Saanen and the Crossbred bucks (2.43 ± 2.08 x 109 and 2.40 ± 2.06 x l O", respectively).

Mass activity of sperms showed no significant differences between breeds.

However, the Saanen bucks recorded the highest score (2.91 ± 0.80) than the Nubian and the Crossbred bucks (2.68 ± 0.79 and 2.83 ± 0.87, respectively).

The percentage of sperm motility showed no breed effect, although it was higher in the Saanen bucks (63.57 ± 8.26) than in the Nubian and the Crossbred bucks (61.07±2.17 and 62.52 ± 8.1, respectively).

Semen quality from the viewpoint of live spermatozoa showed no significant difference between breeds.

Low values of dead spermatozoa were recorded during the study period (10.25 ± 2.78 %, 10.52 ± 3.80% and 10.25 ± 4.23 % for Nubian, Saanen and Crossbred bucks, respectively).

Mean values of abnormal spermatozoa (morphologic defects), followed the same trend of dead spermatozoa.

It showed no significant difference between breeds (7.00 ± 1.98%, 6.85 ± 2.68% and 7.67 ± 3.42% for Nubian, Saanen and Crossbred bucks, respectively) .

In cold stored semen, sperm motility showed no significant difference between breeds.

However, when semen was examined after 24 hours at (+5 °C), a significant decrease was found (P < 0.05) in the motility of spermatozoa diluted with Tris and skim milk extenders (Nubian : 54.13 ± 10.62 % and 51.83 ± 12.33%, respectively ; Saanen : 56.92 ± 7.78% and 53.88 ± 10.0, respectively and Crossbred : 55.71 ± 8.0 and 52.4 ± 6.63%, respectively).

Spermatozoa motility declined faster with short-term storage after 48 hours, although its mean percentage remained at 44.06 or more in Tris-based extender and 41.90 or more in skim milk extender.

It can be concluded that, no significant differene due to breed was recorded in almost all semen characteristics measured except volume of ejaculate.

Fresh diluted semen of Nubian, Saanen and Crossbred bucks, raised under the climatic conditions prevailing in Sudan, can be preserved at + 5 °c for up to 48 hours using Tris or skim milk extenders and can be used successfully for artificial insemination programmes.
