In recent years, optical communications systems increasingly use wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) where high bandwidth systems are implemented to increase data capacity.

WI > IV1 demultiplexer (an essential part of WDM systems) is crucial component in W1 > IVi optical communications systems.

In this thesis optical demultiplexer with auxiliary monitoring channel using multilayer structure design is investigated and improved.

The main function ol'the proposed design is to receive from a fiber a light beam that consists of multiple wavelengths and separate it into its wavelength components using the dispersive material, which is the building material in the proposed design.

The refractive index of the dispersive material is wavelength dependent, so.

Each wavelength component propagating inside the dispersive material will follow its own path and will separate with spatial shift between it and other wavelengths components.

The spatial shift depends on number of refractions inside the proposed design, where several refractions guarantee the spatial shift between different wavelengths and as a result the demultiplexing is achievable.

/ XIso the proposed design provides auxiliary monitoring channels (another output) for monitoring purposes.

This thesis introduces multilayer structure design for optical demultiplexer and investigates the demultiplexing operation in details, and the optical ray geometry model is used to track the propagation path inside the structure.

This thesis invcstigutes the effect of the design parameters such as number of layers of the structure, incidence angle of the optical beam on the device, type of the used dispersive material, spatial shift (separation distance between adjacent channels) and output power on the main and monitoring outputs.

Careful selection of the design parameter values can yield acceptablc size of the overall optica) demultiplexer with the monitoring channel module.

In this thesis the parameter which has a significant effect on spatial shift and sixc of the demultiplexer (LJHMUX) is the refractive index of the base layer.

So this thesis studies three different desiyns for DEMUX based on type of base layer material.

In the first design the base layer material has normal dispersion behaviour, in the second design the base layer material is non dispersive material and in the third design the base layer material has anomalous dispersion behaviour, and then comparing speeitications tor DHMUX (spatial shift, size) in the three designs to choose the best.

In this thesis, alter comparing between the three designs : the findings is the third design (the base layer material has anomalous dispersion) is the best, the size of DEMUX in the third design is less than that in the first design : where there is reduction in the size by a factor of 1 4.

The optical demultiplexer with monitoring channel module is important because providing monitoring and demultiplexing functionality for same device simplifies the operation of commercial optical communications systems and increases their reliability and reduces the geometrical dimensions of overall modules used in building receiver subsystems.
