This study sets out to look into teaching English to Sudanese students of Medicine and Health Sciences in the context of Arabicization at Shendi University, in order to evaluate their English language needs for both academic and professional purposes.

Moreover, it is also important to know about the attitudes of these students towards the use of English language along with Arabic.

The assumption being made in this study is that there is still doubt as to the importance and necessity of using English as a medium of instruction at the university level and that the students at Shendi University are unable to cope with English in their studies and in their future careers due to poor preparatory measures.

These measures may include, syllabus, teaching methods, proper understanding of learners, need and their specific needs for studying English language, motivation and attitude of language learners.

These factors will constitute some of the findings of the present study.

A historical background of the situation of the English language in the Sudan is given to help put the research in context.

A survey of the relevant literature in connection with needs analysis as a basis for ESP course design has been undertaken.

Information collected from the subjects and subject specialists and teachers of English at the faculty of Arts helps to complete the profile of the situation and the status of English there.

The study also makes use of comparison between and within groups of students and professors which will hopefully reflect whether there is variation in the need for English in the academic and professional fields.

This variation will have to be taken into consideration in the process of course design.

The findings and recommendations of the study demonstrate the value of needs analysis in writing outlines of an ESP course for those students of Medicine and Health Sciences at Shendi University in particular and for language learners in general.
