The Effect of the Method of Teaching Crescent Textbooks on the Achievement of the First Preparatory Class Students in Qatar.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate The Crescent Textbooks– first prep- class students in Qatar.

It is also to know the effect of the method of teaching The Crescent textbooks on the achievement for the 1st prep- class students.

The evaluation scales one for teachers and another for students, were developed and validated through a pilot study.

The teachers, scale contains (69) items covering eleven major characteristics of good text books.

The pupils’ scale consists of (19) items.

The teachers’ scale covers the following areas : 1.

Rationale and philosophical basis of the text book.

2.

Objectives.

3.

Language skills.

4.

Vocabulary.

5.

Grammar.

6.

Content.

7.

Method of teaching.

8.

Teaching aids.

9.

Workbook.

10.

Teachers’ book.

11.

General aspects of crescent text book.

Where as, the pupils’ scale includes:- 1.

The teaching aids.

2.

Vocabulary and structure.

3.

Exercises.

4.

General aspects of the text book.

The population of the study includes all students in the first preparatory class in the Ministry of Education in Qatar.

The sample of the study consists of 120 students, (60 males, and 60 females).

The sample also includes (138) supervisors and teachers.

The material evaluated in this study was the crescent text books for the first prep classes.

The results of the study have revealed that the mean score of the experimental group is greater than the mean of the controlled group.

The researcher found that the short dialogue, the teaching aids, and the colorful pictures help the students communicate easily and directly.

This study also shows that there are statistically significant differences between the responses of male and female students.

Interaction is greater among the females.

In the light of these results, it is recommended that the developers of the text book may take into consideration the following : 1.

Teachers should participate in selecting objectives.

2.

Provision of a clear introduction will help teachers recognize what to teach and the pupils know what to learn.

3.

Suggesting a time schedule for covering the text book.

4.

Training English language teachers and providing them with various techniques of current language teaching and learning.

5.

Shortening and clarifying the words and phrases used in cassettes.

6.

Enhancing the attractiveness and usability of the wall- charts to teach the material more effectively.

Finally, since this study is limited to only one district in Doha, it is suggested to conduct similar evaluation studies in other districts for better generalizability of results.
