The impact of grammatical aspects and discoursal features on the overall quality of EFL Academic Writing : the case of Sudanese students in five national universities

The present study has investigated the effect of grammatical aspects and discoursal features-cohesion and coherence–on the overall quality of EFL Sudanese university students’ academic written performance.

Data were collected from Departments of English at five Sudanese national universities.

The data consisted of 125 randomly selected compositions written by the subjects as answers to questions in the examinations held in different academic years.

In analyzing the data, the researcher has used a combination of two linguistic hypotheses of error analysis and discourse analysis.

The results have shown that, among the 13 types of grammatical errors identified, tense occurred most frequently followed by preposition, article, verb formation and concord, respectively.

Results about the cohesion errors and coherence misuses have shown that errors in reference received the highest percentage followed by conjunction errors and lexical cohesion errors, whereas ellipsis and substitution were not used largely by the subjects. To examine the impact of grammatical aspects ad discourse features on the overall holistic quality of academic writing of the students, a sub sample of 52 compositions were examined by two raters for the discourse features and holistic quality and then inter-rated by the researcher.

The average scores of cohesion, coherence and grammatical errors of 52 samples have been used to find out the effect of these writing basic features on the quality of the subjects’ academic writing.

The results have shown strong effect made by grammatical aspects and discourse features on the holistic quality of students’ academic writing.
