The toxic efficacy of aqueous extracts of some aromatic plants on Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus truncatus snails

Two snails have been chosen for this study : Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus truncatus.

The criteria for studied snails are (a) B.

pfeifferi a serve intermediary host for shistosoma mansoni and (b) B.

truncatus is the intermediate host for S.

haematobiun.

These snails were found in irrigation canals in Khartoum State, five aromatic plants (Nigella sativa"black cumin", Geigeria alata"gud gat", cymbopogon schoenanthus ssp proximus"maharieb", C.nervatus"nal" and Boswellia papyrifera"track track") were selected to investigate their extracts effect against tested snails.

Mortality was expressed on probit probabilities and plotted against the log.

Transformed values of aromatic water extract concentration.

The regression line obtained from this data was used for LD50 and LD95 determination.

Cymbopogon nervatus extract showed the highest toxicity against both Biomphalaria pfeifferi and B.

truncatus with LD50 value 213 ppm, 237ppm respectively fllowed by that of Boswellia papyrifera, 213ppm, 331 ppm respectively.

Further deep studies of these plants as promising agents for molluscus control are warranted.
