Analysis and evaluation of EFL learners’ logical connectors errors : the case of the students of English at Omdurman Islamic University

This study aims to analyze and evaluate EFL learners’ errors in English logical connectors.

The target population of this study is students of English at Omdurman Islamic Univesity.

A stratified random sample of 160 students is chosen as a representative sample of the study target population.

Specifically, this study sets out to answer the following questions : 1.

Is there any significant difference between the study subjects, recognition and production errors on English logical connectors? 2.

Is there any significant correlation between the study subjects’ errors of recognition and production on English logical connectors? 3.

Is there any significant difference in the number of errors made by the different groups investigated in the study? 4.

Is there any significant difference between the study subjects according to gender difference? 5.

Is there any significant difference in the errors between the types of logical connectors investigated in the study? To test the hypotheses of this study, data are collected, using a two- version test : a recognition test, which has the multiple-choice format, and a controlled production test cast in the open-ended format.

This is mainly adapted from the TOEFL, OPT and the World Wide Web.

The methods of data analysis are the t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and the correlation coefficient.

The analysis of data reveals the following : 1.

There is no significant difference in the mean of errors of both the recognition and production of English logical connectors made by the study subjects.

2.

There is no significant difference in the mean of errors of both recognition and production of English logical connectors made by students of English according to gender-difference.

3.

There is a strong positive correlation between the students' errors of recognition and production of English logical connectors.

4.

Data analysis reveals that there is no significant difference in the number of errors between the 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th year students.

5.

data analysis reveals that there are significant diference in the mean of errors in the types of logical connectors investigated in the study.

Finally, conclusions have been drawn and recommendations have beeen stated.
