The title of this study is ''Utilization of Short Story for the Teaching of EFL Lexis''.
It aims at demonstrating the practicality of literature exploitation-more precisely short story- stimulating EFL learners to intake lexis.
Therefore, it develops materials besides using working techniques and strategies for the teaching of EFL lexis facilitating its literacy growth. The study formulates four hypotheses to seek answers to the raised questions. The population of the study are Arts Sudanese university students studying English language.
A purposive sampling method is used to collect data.
They are preliminary Omdurman Islamic University's Arts students, studying English language and literature; enrolled for the academic year (2004-2005).
They are naturally divided into two groups : Males& females classes. The data gathering instruments are pre-test and post test.
The pre-test is administered to measure the homogeneity of the two groups before the intervention.
It assures that there is no difference between the subjects of the two groups.
The posttest is used to measure the effects of using short story as an input material for the teaching of EFL lexis along with the effects of implementing current trend techniques and strategies for the same task.
In between the two tests, the two groups received instructions via different materials and different methods and techniques. Scoring the answers of the participants, the SPSS computer program is used to analyze the data.
Interpretation and discussion of the results accompanied the analysis.
The (t) test method is used to conduct the comparison between the subjects of the two groups as well as between the experimental group subjects' performance in the pre-test and in the post-test. The hypotheses of the study have been tested based on the analysis and interpretation of these results.
A comparison between the findings of this study and the previous relevant studies is also performed. The main findings of this study are : 1.
Using short story, as context for the teaching EFL lexis, promotes EFL learners' lexis knowledge in terms of syntagmatic and paradigmatic aspects of knowledge. 2.
Developing certain strategies in EFL learners helps increase their ability to consciously intake lexis. 3.
Using teaching techniques such as matching, recall, multiple choices, filling space, etc.
facilitate EFL learners' intake of the various degrees of lexis knowledge: class of word, form, meaning(s), use, words-relationships, and words-partnerships. 4.
Using a variety of teaching techniques along with developing a number of recommended strategies for the teaching of EFL lexis contributes to the fluency achievement in both EFL lexis comprehension and production.
