الملخص الإنجليزي
-This is a socio-linguistic study.
It is carried out with the aim of investigating and examining the realization of the strategies used by Sudanese Advanced Learners of English with regard to the speech act of request; compliments and compliment responses and to compare these strategies to those used by Native Speakers of English. To this end, two samples were involved.
The first is a group of 30 Sudanese students (Males and Females) from Khartoum University, Faculty of Arts.
The second sample involved 30 Native Speakers (males and females) who are working in Sudan.
A Discourse Completion Test (DCT) is used to generate data related to the strategies used by both groups to perform the speech acts of request, compliment and compliment responses.
The data were then classified in tables and graphs.
The comparison of ratios was carried out for comparing these ratios of the different types of situations and the strategies used by each group for any probable differences or similarities.
The results of the data analysis revealed differences and similarities between the choice of the two groups in their choice of a strategy to perform their requests, compliment or responding to a compliment.
Also, it is found that the Sudanese Learners of English were influenced to a remarkable extent by their first language when they respond to a compliment.
Again, it is observed from the data that the topics of compliments are fewer in number than those adopted by the native speakers, therefore, the nonnative group tended to use a limited number of topics in complimenting others.
As for responding to a compliment, it is found that it is not common in the Sudanese culture that, they accept compliments or respond to a compliment all the time.
However, SALE use the expression "thank you" in responding to a compliment in a high level of frequency.
Also SALE used modifications more than the NSE did in order to be seen as polite as natives and that is due to their poor knowledge of appropriate structure encoded by natives The study ends up with some theoretical and pedagogical implications.
It suggested that learners of a second language in general and English in particular should be made aware of the pragmatic differences between their first language and English language
