الملخص الإنجليزي
Water is getting serious attention throughout the world.
It has a vital role in sustaining life and development in arid and semi-arid regions.
It could be argued that water resources in the Sudan are rather limited, despite the fact that it comprises rainfall, surface flow and groundwater.
The major Atbara river flows from the Ethiopian plateauwith mean annual rainfall flow of about 12 milliard m³ measured at Atbara station.
The rainfall-runoff modeling is very important to provide basic information of activities that are related to the nature of the rivers flow, such as Irrigation, Drinking water supply, Flood control, Hydropower generation and Hydraulic structures. The objective of this research is to apply rainfall-runoff models to Atbara river to provide forecast for operation of hydraulic structures as well as forecast with reasonable lead time to value flood damage and enable efficient watershed management.
The technique that used in the study is based on Galway Flow Forecasting System (GFFS) software which includes Non-parametric and parametric Simple Linear Model (SLM), Non- parametric and Parametric Linear Perturbation Model (LPM), Linearly Varying Gain Factor Model, Artificial Neural Network Model (System Types Models), Soil Moisture Accounting and Routing (SMAR) (conceptual models) and Lead Time Forecasting (Auto Regressive (AR) and Linear Transfer Function (LTF) Methods).
These models were applied to the Atbara River catchments at Kubur and Wad-elhiliew stations with an effective area of about 112400 km² the analysis period was (1987-1998). It was found that the Artificial Neural Network Model (ANNM), Soil Moisture Accounting and Routing (SMAR) and the Lead Time Methods (Auto Regressive & Linear Transfer Function) have higher performance in reproducing the observed discharge.
This result indicates that conceptual models perform better than other system type models which might be attributed to nature of seasonality and linearity of the transformation.
