الملخص الإنجليزي

Most of the students of English language department at university level face a serious problem in using personal pronouns both in production and recognition. This study addresses this problem by analyzing students’ errors on production and recognition of English personal pronouns.

It also compares between students of the 1st year and the 4th year and sets out a hierarchy of the frequencies of errors among the four categories investigated in this study. The study adopts the descriptive approach and uses experimental techniques to test the hypothesis of the study.

For data collection two tests are used; a recognition test that has the multiple-choice format and a controlled production test, which has the open ended format.

The data analysis is performed using a scientific calculator, and the statistical packages for social sciences (SPSS). The main findings of the study are summarized below : 1.In both recognition and production errors, “case” come at the top of hierarchy of the frequencies of errors among the four grammatical categories of personal pronouns investigated.

They are followed by “number” errors then “gender” errors, and finally “person” errors. 2.There is a significant difference between the mean of 1st year students’ errors and the mean of 4th year students’ errors on production of personal pronouns in which, the mean of the 1st year students errors on production is higher than that of the 4th year students.

However there is no significant difference between the mean of 1st year students’ errors and the mean of 4th year students’ errors on recognition of personal pronouns. 3.

There is a significant difference between students mean of errors on production of English personal pronouns and their mean of errors on recognition of English personal pronouns.

1st year students mean of errors on production is higher than their mean of errors on recognition.

In contrast, 4th year students mean of errors on recognition is higher than their mean of errors on production.

4-There is a strong positive correlation between students’ errors on recognition and production of English personal pronouns.
