In the present study, antimicrobial activity of the petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and water extracts of Anogeissus leiocarpus stem bark (family Combretaceae) were studied in vitro against two standard Gram positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus), two standard Gram negative bacteria (Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) and two standard fungal organisms (Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans) using cup-plate agar diffusion method.
The results showed that the extracts had antimicrobial activity against at least two of the tested standard organisms; methanol extract was found to be highly active against all standard bacterial and fungal organisms, followed by the aqueous extract.
The least antimicrobial activity was associated with the petroleum ether extract.
Qualitative Phytochemical screening of the extracts showed presence of triterpenes and /or sterols and fatty acids in the chloroformic extract.
The methanolic extract revealed presence of hydrolysable tannins, saponins and flavonoid xv glycosides, while the aqueous extract revealed presence of hydrolysable tannins and saponins.
All extracts are devoid of alkaloids, coumarins, condensed tannins, anthracene glycosides and anthocyanins.
Six fractions were obtained when thin layer chromatography (TLC) was used to separate the major constituents of the methanol extract ; these fractions were subjected to analysis by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), UV/Visible and Infra red (IR) spectroscopy.
Thirteen components were identified when the methanol extract was analyzed by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectroscopy (GC/MS) technique.
