الملخص الإنجليزي

Phytochemical screening and antimicrobial activities were investigated for two Sudanese traditional medicinal plants which were authenticated at the Medicinal and Aromatic Plants Research Institute (MAPRI).

Extracts of Lepidium sativum seeds (Brassicaceae),and Prunus mahaleb seeds (Rosaceae).were screened for their antimicrobial activity against fourstandard bacteria : two Gram positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus), two Gramnegative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonasaeruginosa) andtwo standard fungal strains namely Aspergillus nigerandCandida albicans. The organic extracts of Lepidium sativum and Prunus mahaleb exhibited low activity against all bacterial strains tested except the benzene extract of Prunus mahalebwhich exhibited intermediate activity.

On the other hand, the oil which was fractionated from the Lepidium sativum chloroform extract showed high activity to full inhibition growth against both Gram positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus) and two fungi tested (Aspergillus nigerandCandida albicans).

The standard organisms were tested against reference antibacterial and antifungal drugs and the results were compared with the activity of the chloroform oily fraction of Lepidium sativum. The seeds ofLepidium sativum andPrunus mahaleb were phytochemically screened to detect the presence of the secondary metabolites.

Unsaturated sterols and Triterpenses, Alkaloids,Flavonoids, Tannins, Anthraquinone glycosides were detected on both plants.

Saponins were present only in Lepidium sativum.

WhileCoumarins and Cyanogenic glycosides were detected onPrunus mahaleb only. The chloroform oily fraction of Lepidium sativum was developed on T.L.C using stationary phase (Silica gel type DG), and two moving phases {(Toluene : Ethyl acetate (93 : 7),( Petroleum ether : Diethyl ether (90 : 10)}.

The results reflected the presence of 14 compounds.

These compounds were detected using GC / MS (for the fraction) as (Cyclotetrasiloxane,octamethyl-.

; Pyrido {2,3-glindole,5-methoxy-2,3,7,9-tetramethyl} ; Cyclopentasiloxane, decamethyl ; Benzonitrile,2-methyl-.

; Bicyclo {4.1.0} hepta-2,4-diene ,2,3,4,5-tetraethyl-7,7-diphenyl.

; m-Tolyl isothiocyanate .

; 2 (1H)-Quinoxalinone.

; Pentasiloxane,1,1,3,3,5,5,7,7,9,9-decamethyl ; 1,3,5-Tris(trimethylsiloxy) benzene ; 2,4,6-Cycloheptatrien-1-one,3,5-bis-trimethylsilyl ; Acetic acid, [bis {(trimethlsilyl) oxy}phosphinyl]-,trimethylsilyl ester ; Dibutyl phthalate ; Heptasiloxane,1,1,3,3 ,5,5,7,7,9,9,11,11,13,13-tetradecamethyl.

; Thiazol-2-amine,4-(6-methylimidazol [2,1-b]thiazol-5-yl) (-N-)2-pyridy1.
