الملخص الإنجليزي

The objective of this study is to assess and evaluate groundwater potential and quality in Gash alluvial basin, with capacity of GIS and RS techniques in groundwater resources assessment and management, by estimating of the water volume in the aquifers, determine the safe yield and Estimate abstraction, through the analysis of the scattered available data.

The study area covered an area of the river Gash-Basin approximately between longitude 36° O’ 46.271"E and latitude 15° 34' 31.037"N in the west and the eastern boundary is the Sudanese Ethiopian border.

In this study the use of Remote Sensing, GIS and other relevant programmes facilities, enable data analysis, management and future updating.

To achieve the objective of the research data was collected such as paper maps ,tabular data and Landsat images and converted from analog to digital form to be suitable for GIS environment and different enhancement process were carried out such as color composite and directional filter.

Groundwater geospatial data has been modeled in GIS using geodatabase involves building of Concepual / Logical Design and Physical design.

GIS techniques is used to analyze the chemical analysis data for Nitrate and Total Dissolved Solids to show the pollution and saline water occurrences also the water level depth variation is analyzed to indicate that the study area is falling under pressure for groundwater demand.

The study came with to the conclusion that there is more pressure on Gash Basin area represented by annual variations in water level depth and quality problem showed in Nitrate pollution and TDS distribution along Gash Basin in which some areas show high levels for Nitrate and brackish water.

The annual recharge was calculated as 145X106 m3 / year with seasonal fluctuations in the water level of 5-6 m and along -term decline of 0.1-0.5 m / year.
