This research aimed to study the economical and environmental impacts of heavycoked gas oil (HCGO) which is used recently in phase one boilers of Khartoum North Power Station (KNPS).The data of different laboratories reports on fuelsused and the conditions of the steam system operating during the test of HCGO were collected and some samples of HCGO were analyzed in KNPS. The comparisons between HCGO specification and the boiler parameters withheavy fuel oil (HFO) were given in tabular form.
Model for steam system, whichwas used to produce steam for electricity generation was proposed in this research. The thermodynamics and economics analysis for the proposed model were made byusing spreadsheet program and the results were given in tabular and graphical form,and then discussed.
The study outcome is that the power plant that used HCGO wascheaper and facility in process storage, transport and draining of oil than HFO,therefore, the pollutant of draining of HFO would be reduced when HCGO is used. However, the general appearance of the HCGO specification is that of lowviscosity fuel which requires little or no heating above the ambient temperature inorder to be atomized satisfactorily.
Furthermore, the total steam production per unitenergy was increased from (0.34kg / MJ) to (0.36kg / MJ), which represents (5.4 %)increase in steam production per MJ of HCGO, while the specific fuel consumptionwas dropped from (0.32Ton / MW) to (0.26Ton / MW), due to combustion efficiencyincreased, which represents (16.3 %) reduction in fuel consumption per MW. Consequently, the power price was dropped from (0.07$ / kw-hr) to (0.05$/kw-hr),which represents (24.2 %) savings in power price/KW-hr; therefore, thefundamental reasons of the power price savings could be attributed to thefollowing: Low price and high calorific value of HCGO over HFO. Low, viscosity and pour point of HCGO contributes in elimination of auxiliarysteam (almost 66654 $ / year savings) and line trace heating. Numbers of personnel required for HCGO draining is less than HFO.
