Some effects of unbalanced extraction of lower primary second molar on the lower permanen dentition

A sample of 32 O.P.G.

radiographs were selected for individuals, (16 males and 16 females; aged 10.0-13.0y) having a history of early loss lower second primary molar from one side.

The data that has been obtained from these traced films proved that the space after early loss of that tooth would be highly reduced (more than 50% of the distance), mainly due to the mesial drift of lower permanent molars (p<0.001) and partly from the distal migration of the whole lower dental arch.

However, this will lead to a midline shift of the lower dental arch toward the side of extraction (93.75% of the sample); impaction or exclusion of its successors (lower second premolar) and at the same time it will give a greater chance for the lower third molar to rotate (p<0.001) and erupt in a more favorable position
