An oral health survey was conducted among (1489) Yemeni school children aged 6-14 years in Sana’a City.

The survey showed different geographic and different socioeconomic status.

The oral health status and treatment needs were investigated in relation to age, gender and attitude to gat chewing.

The result showed that caries free subjects constituted only 4.1 % of the total examined subjects.

The dmft and dmfs values were of 4.16 ± 3.64 and 8.45 ± 8.39 respectively.

These values were found to be of very high significance decreasing with advancing age.

Females demonstrated a significant higher dmft values compared to males, but no significant difference between the two genders in dmfs was found, while the DMFT and DMFS values were of 2.25 ± 1.9 and 3.59 ± 3.78 respectively.

These values were found to be of very high significance increasing with advancing age, and females demonstrated statistically very high values compared to males.

Regarding the treatment needs, 83.9 % of the subjects were in need of one surface filling, and the least percentage 1.6 % were in need of crowns.

The results of this study showed that 100 % of the students experienced gingivitis.

There were statistically very high significant increase of plaque, gingival, and calculus indices with advancing age.

Male recorded very higher significant scores regarding plaque and gingival indices than females, while no significant differences in calculus index were found between males and females.

About 11.2 % of the whole sample reported that they chew qat at least one time per week.

Positive qat chewers demonstrated higher caries free rate compared to negative qat chewers, while positive qat chewers demonstrated very high significant values of plaque, gingival, and calculus indices compared to negative qat chewers.
