Historians of psychology agreed upon the great contribution of Helmholtz to the development of physiological optics and thus the development of experimental psychology.

Three of the fundamental concepts that were assumed to be founded by him in the nineteenth century were discussed by Ibn al-Haytham in the eleventh century.

These are the doctrines of the unconscious inference, the definition of the horopter, and the notion of pure sensation and true perception.

Additionally, many anatomical parts of the eye that were elaborated by Helmholtz were described by Ibn al-Haytham who puts the foundation of the physiological optics.

Ibn al-Haytham's theory of visual perception represents a real revolution that made a radical change in the optics.

He discussed 22 forms of visual perception in Chapter 3 of Kitab al-Manazir.
