Flow properties of fresh concrete by using modified geotechnical Vane shear test

An experimentalinvestigationhasbeenperformedtostudytheefficiencyofusingmod- ified geotechnicalVanesheartesttoevaluatethefreshpropertiesofconcrete.Differentconcrete mixes withdifferentcoarseaggregates(bothtypeandsize)wereconducted.Moreoverdifferent shapes andsizesofVaneprobeswereinvestigated.Alsotheinfluenceofusingenhancingworkabil- ity admixtureswasstudied.TheresultsoftheshearVanetestwerestatisticallyanalyzedandcom- pared withthoseforstandardtests.TheresultsrevealthattheVanesheartestwithmodifiedblades can besimplyexecutedtomeasureworkabilityofconcreteanywherewithagoodefficiency.Useful equations withgoodcorrelationcoefficientsareestablishedbetweenthewellknownstandardtests include compactingfactor,slump,VeBeandflowtestsandtheVaneyieldmethod.Sizeeffectphe- nomenon relatedtoVanesizeisrecordedfortheVaneyieldstressresults.TheresultsoftheVane yield stresscouldclearlydistinguishbetweennotonlymixesmadeupofdifferentaggregatetypes but alsotheaggregatemaximumnominalsize.TheresultsoftheVanesheartestareclearlyaffected by usingenhancingworkabilityadmixturesanditsdosage.AdirectproportionbetweenVaneyield stress resultsandthecompanioncompactingfactorstestvaluesisstronglynoticedwhichintroduces the Vanetestmethodasasimpleinstrumentthatcouldbesimplyadaptedanywheretomeasurethe workability offreshconcreteinsteadofcompactingfactorthatisalaboratoryapparatus
