The impacts of customs changes on traffic accidents in Jordan

As a result of the Jordanian government’s decision of reducing the customs on both new and used cars in addition to allowing the taxation of more than five year-old cars, more than 72,000 extra vehicles were allowed to use the road network in just fifteen months.

In response to claims from different groups that the new law has resulted in an increase of traffic accidents, the Jordanian government has cancelled its decision after only one year from passing it.

This paper examines the impacts of law changes on traffic accidents.

It was concluded that the custom reduction and the importing of old cars have no effect on traffic accidents.

Therefore, the government decision of canceling the law was not appropriate.
