The results of structural and Mossbauer studies are reported on the intermetallic compound Tb2Fe17.

X-ray diffraction patterns rLveat the presence of a dominant rhombohedral {Th.jZ.Vi'j typej phase with lattice parameters a = 8.5 A and c = 12.4.

A Mossbauer spectra at room temperature and liquid-nitrogen temperature indicate the presence of a major magnetic subspectrum corresponding to the dominant Tb2Fe17 rhombohedral phase, and a minor magnetic component corresponding to n-Fe.

In addition, a weak paramagnetic component was observed in the central region of the spectrum.

The subspectrum for the rhombohedral phase was fitted with seven magnetic components corresponding to the nonequivalent sites 6c, 9d> 18f, and 18h.

The values of isomer shifts and magnetic hyperfme fields at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature indicate that the compound under investigation has a lower Debye temperature than a typical 3d metal-iron compound, and an ordering temperature significantly closer to room temperature than a-Fe.
