Effect of hypothyroidism on sperms characteristics in testes and epididymides of male albino rats

The effect of hypothyroidism induced by carbimazole (CBZ) on the male reproductive system was investigated using 52 adults of albino male rats weighing 250-300 g treated orally with two doses of CBZ, 80 and 160 mg / kg body weight while control animals were given distilled water orally-Testing was done after 2, 4, 6, 8 weeks of treatment.

The results showed a significant decrease in the percentage of live sperms and sperm numbers in the testis and epididymis (head and tail) while a significant increase was observed in the percentage of abnormal sperms in those parts of reproductive system (both significantly at p ≤ 0.001).

This study confirms the existence of a clear effect of thyroid hormones disorder on the productivity and effectiveness of the male reproductive system in rat.
