Symmetrical and unsymmetrical derivatives of 5,5 -dimethyl-2,2-bipyridine

Selective derivatization of 5,5'-dimethyl-2,2/-bipyridine has been achieved with controlled free radical bromination using yV-bromosuccinimide.

Mono and disubstituted derivatives with alkyl bromides, alcohols, aldehydes, amines, acids, esters and amides have been obtained in good yields using the above strategy.

Similar derivatives were obtained for 5-methyl-2,2'-bipyridine.
