The paper presents the development of the friction base isolation (FBI) scheme for masonry buildings.
The FBI concept is established on the basis of many analytical and experimental investigations carried out in the recent past.
To begin with, a feasibility study of the FBI concept was undertaken by testing pilot brick house models using different sliding materials, which were interposed between the superstructure and the substructure.
It was observed by testing of models on the shaking table that in the case of friction-base isolated models, there was no amplification of accelerations, which occur normally in the case of fixed-base short period buildings.
Afterwards, more model studies were made employing different scales and materials.
The experimental results of model studies were also compared with the analytical results.
The comparisons show a good general agreement between experimental and theoretical results.
The analytical studies show that the seismic force transmitted to the building superstructure is largely limited by frictional resistance and the response of the structure is approximately linearly dependent on input frequency.
The FBI scheme is easy, economically feasible, and requires no special techniques for the construction of masonry structures.
