-Resistance to antimicrobials is a global issue, and is worsening in most parts of the world.

It was thought that education, surveillance data and dissemination of these findings to clinicians would help in curbing antibiotic misuse.

Resistance continues to grow as well as consumption of antibiotics.

This is a dangerous trend and we cannot continue to rely on success of pharmaceutical research.

New molecules are more expensive and need longer time to be assessed.

Some recently appeared molecules were chosen to be critically assessed in this search.

Linezolid, an oxazolidinone, should be restricted for vancomycin-resistant en-terococci, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and beta-lactam resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, Quinupristin/dalfopristin is an alternative to linezolid for the same microorganisms.

Caspofungin, antifun-gal echinocandin, is more active than amphotericin B but is inactive against Cryptococcus neoformans.

Among antivirals Cidofovir is used for Cytomegalovirus retinitis, but activity in other body sites has nol been established.
