Antiphospholipid antibodies in women with recurrent spontaneous abortion

This study was carried out at Bab El-Sharia "Sayed Galal" University Hospital for two years starting from December 1998.

It included eighty pregnant women during the first trimester attending the outpatient clinic.

They were classified into two groups.

Group I (study group), included 60 cases with unexplained recurrent pregnancy loss.

Group II (control group), included 20 cases with two or more normal pregnancies without previous abortions.

Both groups were tested for lupus anticoagulant using activated partial thromboplastin time (APPT) as a phospholipid dependent coagulation test and anti-cardiolipin antibodies (IgG and IgM) by ELISA.

The result revealed that lupus anticoagulant was detected in (30%) cases of study group but in none of control group.

Anticardiolipin antibodies were detected in (21.6%) cases of study group but in none of the control group.
