Visceral fat as a major cardiovascular risk factor in obesity

The aim of this work is to study some metabolic risk factors in obese patients and to clarify if there are any correlation between these factors and body fat distribution with special reference to visceral fat.

Study design : This study was performed on 50 obese pre-menopausal women and 10 non-obese females acting as a control group .All females included were subjected to full medical history, complete clinical examination, and anthropometric measures including BM1, waist to hip circumference ratio (WHR), and skin fold thickness.According to these measures, the subjects were divided to 3 groups: group I included 30 obese females with WHR 0.86-1.15 (android obesity) and BM1 30-47 Kg / m2, group 11 included20 obese females with WHR 0.68-0.84(gynecoid obesity) and BMI 30-48.5 Kg / m2, and group III included 10 non-obese females with WHR 0.73-0.83 and BMI 20-24.5 Kg / m2.

CT scan on the abdomen, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and measurement of Zfycated haemoglobin (G.Hb), fasting plasma insulin level, complete lipid profile, Plasminogen activator inhibitor -1 (PAI-1) and serum uric acid were done to all subjects included in the study.
