Evaluation of V-Y lenghthening plasty and multiple-strand sutures technique for the treatment of neglected achilles tendon rupture

Aim of the work : We evaluated the results of repairing neglected Achilles tendon rupiure in seven patients, using the V-Y lengthening plasty and end to end or end to bone repair using the : multiple-strand sutures technique.

Patients and method: The average age of our patients was 44 years, with five of them over weight by more than 10kg compared to the average.

The average period between the injury and repair was 14 weeks (range 10 - 21 weeks), the average size of the gape was 6cm (range 5-7.5 cm).

We had three cases got the tendon avulsed from the bone, and four had tendon substance tears.

We performed the V-Y lengthening in all of them, and then we repaired the ends by four strand sutures.

We followed up the patients for an average of 26 weeks (range 18-38 weeks).

Results: We achieved either excellent or good results with no fair or poor results, and we reported no serious complications, or re-rupture of the tendon.

All the patients were able to return back to the pre-injury level of activity.
