الملخص EN

This article examines the nature and meaning of disability attitudes and their implications for improving the quality of life of people with disabilities.

Disability attitudes in India are viewed in historical perspective to track the change process.

That such attitudes affect family based and community based rehabilitation is highlighted through research studies.

An action programme to change fatalistic attitudes in a rural community is also discussed in detail.
