الملخص الإنجليزي
Two experiments were carried out to study growth fattening and digestibility in Sudanese desert goat kids to investigate the nutritive value of pigeon pea hay at different dietary levels on performance, nutrient digestibility and carcass characteristics of kids.
24 male kids, 3-4 months old were divided into four groups of almost the similar mean weight (9.7 ± 0.198 kg) were used in the first experiment.
The experiment was carried out following completely randomized design (CRD) with four diets treatment each diet containing 6 animals.
Treatments A (control), B, C and D diets contained 0,10, 20 and 30 % pigeon pea hay, respectively, replacing alfalfa hay and replacing part of sorghum feterita.
The second experiment 12 kids belong to the 24 kids used in the first experiment.
3 from each treatment were used to evaluate the feed by digestion trial.
The results indicated that there were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the daily weight gain which amount to gm/head 70.33, 54.83, 57.50 and 53.50 for groups A, B, C and D respectively.
Average daily dry matter intake in gm was 508.75, 468.82, 487.89 and 478.50 for group A, B, C and D respectively.
Feed conversion ratio which were 7.23, 8.55, 8.94 and 8.49 for groups A, B, C and D respectively revealed not significant differences (p > 0.05) between the control A and other dietary treatments.
The digestibility study results exhibited no significant differences between the four groups in dry matter, organic matter, crude protein, nitrogen free extract and total digestible nutrient.
However significant differences (p < 0.05) between the four treatments in the ether extract and crude fibre were obtained .
To study the carcass characteristics 3 animals randomly selected from each group to were slaughtered.
Result showed no significant differences between the four treatments in both hot and cold dressing out percentages and carcass shrinkage as well as the non-carcass components and whole sale cuts.
Feeding 30 % pigeon pea hay has no adverse effect on animal health and no bloat.
