الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed to shade light on the importance of sports for the adolescents by showing the effects of different types and durations of sport exercise on body temperature, pulse rate and blood pressure as well as some serum enzyme levels which are affected by exercise in adolescents.

This study was carried out in a summer camp for primary students at the Children and Youth Palace in Omdurman.

The volunteers participated in this study were males who were nearly of the same age (13.00 + 1.32 years), with average height (157.56 + 10.71 Cm) and average weight (44.60 + 10.15 kg).

The selected sports were basketball, karate and gymnastic.

Exercise for each sport was practiced at a rate of 11/2 hour per day, and was practiced every other day with durations for each sport as follows:- 1- Basketball: 71/2 , 17, 21, 351/2 and 45 hours for 5, 10, 12, 23 and 28 days, respectively.

2- Karate: 21, 30 and 39, hours for 12, 18 and 24 days respectively.

3- Gymnastic : 21 and 30 hours for 12 and 18 days, respectively.

The studied enzymes were, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT / AST), glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT / ALT) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH).

Body temperature, pulse rate and blood pressure were measured for basketball volunteers only.

Body temperature was measured by using a clinical thermometer placed sublingually for 3 minutes, whereas pulse rate was measured from the radial artery at the wrist joint for 1 minute and blood pressure was measured by using a sphygmomanometer.

The diastolic blood pressure was recorded as soon as the sound disappeared.

Blood samples were drawn from the arm vein using disposable syringes and the serum separated was kept at–20 0C for the analysis of the above mentioned enzymes.

The results revealed that with basketball, effect of exercise duration on both body temperature and systolic blood pressure was insignificant.

However, pulse rate increased significantly with the increase of duration of exercise up to 23 days, while systolic blood pressure decreased obviously with the 28 days, whereas, the diastolic pressure was the highest in the 35 ½ hours group.

GPT enzyme concentration increased significantly (p < 0.01) with both 35 1/2 and 7 1/2 hr (p< 0.01), followed by 17 hrs (p > 0.05) for basketball exercise.

Also, a significant increase (p < 0.05 ) was detected with gymnastic around 30 hr duration while karate was shown not to affect GPT level.

Non of the sports was shown to affect GOT level.

Similarly, both Karate and gymnastic sports, did not affect LDH levels.

Basketball significantly (p < 0.01) increased LDH concentrations at both 35 1/2 and 7 1/2 hrs durations (p< 0.01) followed by 45 hr duration (p > 0.05).
