الملخص الإنجليزي

This study assesses and explores the water harvesting planning techniques in the Red Sea State with special reference to Khor Arbaat. The study employed the Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, where two different methods to obtain the maximum discharge and runoff hydrograph, respectively, for Khor Arbaat.

The 1st method was the rational equation, which was used to determine the maximum discharge. To apply the Rational Method the following parameters have to be determined : i.

Area and length of catchment considered, using the manual screen digitizing in ArcView3.2 software. ii.

Time of concentration, using an empirical formula. iii.

Design rainfall Intensity Duration Curves that have been developed for return periods 2, 5,10,25,50 and 100 years. The 2nd.

Method was the: Famine Early Warning System (FEWS) model, which was used to determine the runoff hydrograph for Khor Arbaat. The remotely sensed data used in this study, for Khor Arbaat, had been extracted from satellite imageries 171-46 and 171-47 land sat TM image taken in 1996.

Moreover, altitude data were gathered from the topographic maps and interpreted satellite images. -The results obtained from the application of the Rational Method were compared to that of other studies. -The FEWS model had been calibrated, using records of two years. And had not been tested because of lack of data. The maximum discharge is one of the important parameters required for the design of water harvesting projects.

In view of the difficulty of estimations this parameter in data scarce region such as the Red Sea State, the methodology adapted in this thesis provide a very useful tool for planning and designing water harvesting projects.
